When a foreign order can switch off your AI

On the evening of June 12, 2026, a United States export order forced a major AI company to cut off its two most capable models to every foreign national, worldwide, overnight. Because the company could not separate foreign users from the rest in real time, it shut the models off for everyone. People in Canada who were using the tool an hour earlier lost it the same night.

OIATC has published its position on what that means for First Nations. The lesson is not which model to use. The model is the swappable layer, and sovereignty lives in the data a community governs under OCAP and the infrastructure it controls. Read it at /positions/sovereign-ai.
